Battery Cell Lot Traceability: From Approved Sample to Shipped Power Bank

How can a buyer trace a shipped power bank back to the approved battery cell?

Direct answerLink the approved cell specification and supplier to incoming cell lots, pack assembly records, finished-unit lots and shipment cartons. Keep test-summary design identity separate from production-lot traceability; both are needed for a defensible handoff.

A shipping certificate is not a map of which cell lot entered which finished unit. Conversely, a lot code does not prove the battery design passed transport testing. Buyers need both threads joined at the SKU revision.

Start with design identity

Record the approved cell maker and model, electrical specification, pack configuration, protection design and exact SKU revision. Retain the applicable battery test summary and the identity fields needed to relate it to the shipped design. PHMSA explains the UN 38.3 test-summary availability and traceability context for lithium batteries.

Do not infer a current production lot from a prototype report. Ask whether the submitted document covers the design actually placed in the shipment and whether a design change triggers a fresh determination.

Build the lot chain

At receipt, record supplier lot, quantity, date and incoming inspection result. At pack assembly, record which cell lots enter which work orders. At finished assembly, link pack/work-order lots to serial or batch ranges; at packing, link those ranges to carton and shipment IDs.

Choose a traceability granularity that can support containment. If two cell lots are mixed without records, an issue may force a much wider hold. Test a mock reverse trace from a carton to the incoming cell record before accepting the system.

Use the chain for release and response

Release should require complete records, accepted inspection and a match to the approved design. A missing link is an open deviation, even if a sample passes a spot check. Store the file where the importer and distributor can retrieve the relevant summary and batch information.

If field returns point to a particular lot, quarantine the related finished-unit ranges and investigate cause. The point of traceability is a smaller, faster and more accurate decision, not merely an archive of spreadsheets.

A buyer scenario

Illustrative buyer scenario: a distributor reports swelling in one shipment. The supplier has an incoming cell-lot number but cannot connect it to finished-unit cartons. The buyer holds a broad range until the mapping is rebuilt and makes carton-to-cell reverse tracing a release gate for the next order. This is a hypothetical workflow, not a ZEROSET incident.

Frequently asked questions

Is a UN 38.3 summary the same as lot traceability?

No. It concerns tested battery design; production-lot records connect real shipments to their components.

What is the minimum practical chain?

Approved design, cell lot, pack/work order, finished-unit range and carton/shipment.

Must every unit have a serial number?

The suitable granularity depends on risk and distribution; use enough detail to contain a suspect lot.

Can two cell lots be mixed?

Only with records that preserve which finished ranges contain each lot.

When should a test summary be reviewed again?

When a battery design change may require reassessment under the applicable transport rules.

What if a record is missing?

Hold or explicitly disposition the affected shipment; do not mark the chain complete.

What should a buyer request from the supplier?

A sample reverse-trace exercise and a document index tied to the exact SKU revision.
